Low sex drive in men: what’s behind it, and what helps

Low libido is common, and it’s rarely “just age.” Stress, sleep, weight, medicines, ED, and hormones can all play a part, often more than one at once. A free, private visit at our Metairie clinic is a good place to find out what’s going on for you.

Common causes of low libido in men

Desire depends on your body, your mind, and your relationship. These are the most common reasons it drops:

  • Stress, anxiety, or depression. Mental load is one of the biggest drains on desire.
  • Poor sleep or sleep apnea. Tired men want sex less, and sleep apnea can lower testosterone.
  • Extra weight, diabetes, or high blood pressure. These affect blood flow, energy, and hormones.
  • Medicines. Some antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, opioids, and hair-loss medicines can lower desire.
  • ED. When erections are unreliable, many men start avoiding sex, and desire fades with it.
  • Low testosterone or thyroid problems. Hormones matter, but they’re only one piece.
  • Alcohol and relationship strain. Both are common and often overlooked.

How Aspire can help

Your provider starts with a private conversation and an in-person evaluation, then focuses on what’s likely driving the change.

When ED is part of it

Reliable erections often bring desire back. Options include ED medication, ED injections, and Soundwave Therapy.

When weight is part of it

Losing extra weight can lift energy and, for some men, testosterone. See physician-supervised GLP-1 weight loss.

When medicines may be involved

Your provider reviews your health history and medicines and tells you what may be affecting desire, so you can talk it over with the doctor who prescribed them.

When hormones may be involved

Aspire doesn’t offer testosterone replacement therapy. If low testosterone may be part of it, your provider will explain the next step. TRT questions, answered.

Your first visit is free and private. Tell us what’s going on, and we’ll build a plan around you.

Questions men ask about low libido

Is low sex drive normal as men get older?

Desire can change with age, but a sudden or bothersome drop usually has a cause worth looking at, such as sleep, stress, weight, medicines, ED, or hormones. Many of those can be treated.

Is low libido the same as ED?

No. Libido is desire; ED is trouble getting or keeping an erection. They often go together, though: when erections are unreliable, many men lose interest, and treating ED can bring desire back.

Do I need testosterone therapy?

Not necessarily. Many men with low desire have normal testosterone. Aspire doesn’t offer testosterone replacement therapy, but your provider can help you sort out what’s likely behind the change and what to do next.

Can medicines lower sex drive?

Yes. Some antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, opioids, and hair-loss medicines can. Don’t stop any medicine on your own; your provider will review your list with you.

Is my visit confidential?

Yes. Your visit is a private, one-on-one conversation with a licensed provider at our Metairie clinic, and your information is protected under HIPAA.

What does the first visit cost?

Your first visit is free. Your provider explains the cost of any treatment before you start.
