What the evidence says
Soundwave Therapy is our name for low-intensity shockwave therapy, sometimes called acoustic wave therapy. A handheld applicator sends gentle pulses of acoustic energy into the tissue of the penis. The aim is to encourage better blood flow, which is one of the most common physical reasons erections become harder to get or keep.
It has been studied in clinical trials for improving blood flow in men with ED, and the results so far are mixed. It is not FDA-cleared for treating ED, and the American Urological Association guideline still considers low-intensity shockwave therapy for ED investigational. We would rather tell you that up front than oversell it.
It is not a fit for everyone. It tends to be considered for men whose ED is mild to moderate and linked to blood flow, and for men who would prefer to avoid or reduce medication. If your ED is mainly psychological, related to nerve damage, or more severe, ED medication or ED injections may suit you better. What a session is like
You stay clothed from the waist up and lie back on a treatment table. A gel is applied and the applicator is moved over a few areas for a short session. There are no needles and no anesthetic, and most men describe a mild pulsing. You can drive yourself home and go straight back to your day. Treatment is given as a course of sessions over several weeks, and your provider sets the schedule with you.
Shockwave, acoustic wave, or Soundwave Therapy?
These names describe the same kind of treatment. You may see it called shockwave therapy for ED, acoustic wave therapy, low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (Li-ESWT or ESWT) or a clinic’s own brand name. Soundwave Therapy is our name for it.

How many sessions do I need?
Soundwave Therapy is given as a course of short sessions spread over several weeks. Your provider sets the number and spacing for you at your consultation, based on your history and how you respond.
Does Soundwave Therapy work for ED?
Low-intensity shockwave therapy has been studied in clinical trials for improving blood flow in men with ED, with mixed results. It is not FDA-cleared for ED, and the American Urological Association guideline still considers it investigational. Who is Soundwave Therapy not a good fit for?

Is Soundwave Therapy the same as GAINSWave?
Both are names used for low-intensity shockwave therapy for ED. GAINSWave is another company’s brand, and Aspire is not affiliated with it. Low-intensity shockwave therapy is not FDA-cleared for ED, so your provider will talk through whether it suits you.
Do you offer shockwave therapy in New Orleans?

What is extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for ED?
“Extracorporeal” means the treatment is given from outside the body. The form studied for ED is low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (Li-ESWT), which sends gentle acoustic pulses into the tissue of the penis to encourage better blood flow. Soundwave Therapy is our name for it.
