Two medicines, four brand names

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®. It acts on the GLP-1 receptor. Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro® and Zepbound®. It acts on both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors.

Ozempic® and Mounjaro® are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy® and Zepbound® are FDA-approved for chronic weight management.

Brand-name vs. compounded GLP-1s

A compounded medication is prepared by a pharmacy for an individual patient rather than manufactured as a brand-name product. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed. They are not the same products as FDA-approved brand-name medicines.

A compounded medication may be considered only when appropriate for an individual patient’s medical needs and permitted under applicable law. Be cautious of any clinic that calls a compounded product “generic Ozempic” or describes it using a brand-name medicine’s FDA approval or study results.
