ED pills: brand names and generics
Most ED pills are PDE5 inhibitors. They help blood flow when you are aroused. You may know them by their brand names:
- Viagra®: sildenafil
- Cialis®: tadalafil
- Levitra® and Staxyn®: vardenafil
- Stendra®: avanafil
At Aspire, providers prescribe sildenafil and tadalafil, the same active ingredients as Viagra and Cialis, after an in-person evaluation. Ask your provider about other options.
ED injections: TriMix, BiMix, and VIP
ED injections work directly in the penis, so they don’t depend on the same pathway as pills. Many men who don’t respond well to pills do well with them. Common compounded formulas include:
- TriMix: papaverine, phentolamine, and alprostadil
- BiMix: usually papaverine and phentolamine
- VIP: vasoactive intestinal peptide with phentolamine
- QuadMix: a TriMix formula with a fourth ingredient added
Alprostadil is also sold as FDA-approved brand-name injections, such as Caverject® and Edex®. Compounded injection formulas are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed.
When clinically appropriate, Aspire providers may prescribe compounded formulas such as TriMix, BiMix, and VIP. Your first dose and the injection technique are taught in our Metairie clinic, so you can use them confidently at home. Learn more about ED injections in Metairie.
